Life planning is the process of organising the documents, accounts and decisions your family would need if you were unavailable, unwell or gone. Your digital legacy is everything you own or control online — email, photos, social media, subscriptions, cloud storage, loyalty programs and any cryptocurrency or digital assets. Many of these accounts cannot be accessed by next of kin without prior instructions, and some are permanently lost if nobody knows they exist. An executor administers your estate: locating assets, paying debts, and distributing what remains according to your will. Choose someone organised, willing, likely to outlive you, and able to stay level-headed among family members. Ask them first — being named without warning is a common source of stress. Start early and start small. Raise one specific topic rather than the whole estate — where the will is kept, or who you would want making medical decisions. Framing it as reducing future burden on them, rather than as a discussion about death, tends to make the conversation easier for everyone.
